Oh I am sorry to hear about poor Alfie! But it sounds like you made the right though difficult decision. He was very fortunate to be able to enjoy his final months with you. Ah bless him. It must have been so painful for him - and you - in the end.
A puppy will be a whole different experience! And wise to leave it until after Christmas!

As I said before, puppies are hard work. But you had the work of settling Alfie, so it wouldn't be anything different. After Christmas there are usually plenty of animals available for adoption, so good luck if you decide to go for that option.
